Workshops set to begin at Blackbird Studio and Gallery, North Berwick, Maine
Painting Realism in Watercolor, I
Daryl-Ann Hurst, instructor, at Blackbird Studio and Gallery
Every realist painter I have ever known who has not been given instruction on how to make watercolors behave “the way they want them to” has become frustrated with the “mind-of-its-own” quality of the medium. The paint runs and puddles, and leaves weird marks that its opaque cousins don’t. It behaves very differently when you work on a wet surface or a dry surface.
I can’t teach patience, but I can give you the fundamentals of how to control the medium. Most of the two sessions of these workshops will involve layering thin paint over thin paint, on a wet surface. I will teach techniques for correcting mistakes, developing highlights, and creating deep, rich large expanses of flat color. We will work from a very simple still life.
All supplies will be provided. The class will meet on two consecutive Tuesdays, September 23 and September 30, from 6-8 pm. The price for both classes is $45 per person, and is due at on the first night. The class size is limited, so please sign up early!
I have been showing my work for nearly 40 years nationally, and was recently asked to contribute an oil painting to the Rochester Museum of Fine Art. I was also given the Artistic Achievement Award in the Visual Arts for my 2014 show at the Rochester Library, in Rochester, NH. I am primarily an abstract painter, but I am classically trained and can work in a realistic style, as well. My “Woven Tribute” is on display at Blackbird this month.
Let’s make some art!! The Blackbird Studio and Gallery is located at 387 Somersworth Road, North Berwick-right across the road from Noble High School.
We are also planning other workshops, so please stay tuned. Also please like our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/blackbirdnorthberwick?ref=br_tf
