“Meez” series, the beginning

“Modigliani’s Mistress” really wasn’t supposed to be anything more than another of my oil/oil pastel abstracts. But, the initial lines, turned on-end created the shape of a Modigliani portrait.

She has perpetuated a series of “portraits” that I am calling the Meez series. Not direct self-portraits, but drawn from me, and they are all female.

Art for me has to be a constant learning process.

Updates and revisions

I got up this morning after lying in bed contemplating how this piece was not finished. After dinner, I changed all that!

Now. those of you who don’t know what a blizzard “looks” like, have an idea.

I also worked on the two canvases that I have in progress. “Modigliani’s Mistress” is smiling now-sort of. I blocked out more of the ground, and added a second eye to the face, as well.

These canvases start completely saturated with paint thinner, to enable the wash effects that I work with. This one got its’ third “bath” tonight, got flipped upside down from the last time I worked on it. I added the metallic gold, white, and deepened some of the purple. It important to note here also that the underlying texture is part of my prep process which includes creating that texture with acrylic paint and a palette knife.

I am hoping to have these canvases both finished this week-end, since there is a call for 100 Market Street that I would like to submit something to. If not, not a tragedy!

I did a lot of shoveling this morning, so an early night for me. Enjoy!

This is a tough piece for me since this is really out of my comfort zone. I rarely set out to portray anything unless it is in fairly exacting detail. So, there is a side that wants to obliterate the facial features and make this strictly an abstract. Or, commit to all of the available detail-except in this case, there is none.

There is also a new oil, and I have no idea where this one might go yet.

But, I see a head-and that’s how the one above started. This canvas I treated with a surface, which might make it a greater challenge-or might make it easier to make it “mine”.

So, please feel free to follow the progress of these two works. I will try to make updates as I work on them.

Snow and Topos

Today was to be all about art. We were predicted to get 4″-8″ of snow, a perfect excuse to get into the paint.

I have two canvases midway, and I had several challenges to fulfill. I can safely say the canvases are now too wet to continue on and the challenges are completed. A personal goal was also met today by exceeding prior views for my post in one day-and the day is not over.

For most of the morning, I seemed to be able to do no wrong. The right materials and the right colors seemed to just find my fingers!

My good friend, Jeannie Griffin-Peterka is really a presence in this piece. Her work and mine are aligned, but her palette is more controlled and subdued, and she blocks her composition differently.

Here is one finished last night that did not get photographed until this morning, which explains quite visually the difference in palette, though mine is usually has more white than this. I love my color!

I am having way too much experimental fun with literally painting with pastels. This paper was soaked a few times and the marks that are visible were made with a palette knife. Thanks again to my friend, Erika Carty who added more colors to my palette of pastels the other night.

Where I am not maybe channeling other artists, I am comparing my thought processes, and art processes to reaching peaks. I have a real love for hiking, seeing vistas from a different perspective, and looking down at what I have just accomplished or overcome.

So, this is a sampling…I am posting more.

A note about the way I work: every day, if possible. When I can’t there seems to be this deluge of artistic energy that is apparent on the week-end.

 

More art from last night

On to the Kittery Art Association, since I had a meeting of the Seacoast Moderns to attend there.

A drastic difference from 100 Market, not so much in quality of execution, but in depth. “Color Palette” offers a great deal of eye-candy. And, much like the “candy food group” is to the body, there is real no nutritional value  to the brain in this show.

This is another venue where I am a member and regularly show, as well. I joined this art association four years ago to have an outlet, and for many of us, it does provide that in a lovely two-story building on Kittery Point. I couldn’t make the drop-off for this show, since I was hanging the Berwick Art Association show at Sole City, at the same time. There are some very technically skillful members, which was also my “draw”. And, it is not nearly as expensive to be a member as the Ogunquit Art Association or the New Hampshire Art Association-though, they look better on the resume since you are juried into them. KAA has no jury process.

As with the Gallery at 100 Market Street, the KAA shows are always very well-hung. Judith Bryant has a remarkable eye for making very diverse work, in medium, theme and quality, work together. And, she has no prior knowledge what she will have to work with until it arrives!

Not as challenging or thought-provoking as the Portsmouth show, but definitely worth the drive to Kittery Point his week-end.

Anne Vaughan, Sole City and turning 60

I turned 60 today. I am not where I planned to be but in many ways, though where I am didn’t exist when I made those plans.

I never planned to be the Show Coordinator for an art association. And, this is a fun gig.

I also never planned to have other people’s work at my house prior to a show. Damn. I always want to buy it!!

Anne Vaughan entrusted two of her pieces with me for our next show-here’s “Rose Window”.  Anne’s work has the energy that beats most modern painters. This grandmother, a retired lawyer, and ex-museum docent, has a powerful, confident mark. Influenced by Delaunay, and the second wave of European Impressionists, she is highly adept at florals, landscapes and abstracts. Her most recent work delves into the socio-political with portraits of abused women, war victims, racially-triggered violence, etc.

I met Anne at the Red Saturday (BAA) event last year. She worked on a piece, and  set it down to dry. A child subsequently stepped on it, and for her, a “no big deal”.  She also sold a piece out of the parking lot later.

She will have this and another piece at Sole City this month. This group show will consist of work of mine, Anne Vaughan, Ruth Ann Bleau, Bill Moore, Beth Wittenberg, Christy Bruna, Erika Carty, Jim Munro and others. I will be hanging this show and pulling my own tomorrow afternoon.

 

“Dry” night :)

I had business in Rochester tonight, otherwise I would have done the Portsmouth “Art Around Town”.

But, I have worked on the postcards and I want to share this little “oldie” with you. This was done in 1978. My first class with Bruce Everett resulted in this. This is one of the only class projects I still own.

“Tis the season!

I stopped by Blackbird Studio today because a good friend wanted to check out the new show-and show her support by making a few small purchases.

As we sat drinking our beverages and gossiping in the gallery, the light snow fell softly outside. We watched it through the window, rimmed with a pine cone swag, as the fire crackled in the wood stove.

Yes, a very different kind of gallery and Christmas shopping sort of experience.

As Steffanie was about to leave, I was going to make an exit as well, but a car pulled into the lot, so I decided to stick around. A family had driven from Canterbury, New Hampshire-quite a hike from North Berwick, Maine, to visit.

I hope more people like them take the time to pay a visit as well.

Challenges, timelines and pure exhaustion

Thanksgiving week was all about prep for Red Saturday, the Berwick Art Association art fair and the hanging of the Sole City show. And, to make all of that happen, I took the end of my vacation time to make sure it did.

Now, in the meantime I met a very nice man online who lives an hour away…oh yeah, and did I mention the snowstorm that arrived on Thanksgiving Eve…I think by now you are getting the point. The vacation time was not a guarantee that I would see the Escher show at the Currier with George, make lots of wonderful product that would sell, and actually have a day or two to goof off.

Actually the part that DID happen was making lots of good product. All of that product will go to Blackbird Studios on Saturday. (When I define something as “product”, I am talking about wares other than pure fine art.) I finished a number of hand-beaded purses this last week.

The wear-and-tear of an art fair is tiring at best. Ten hours and the boiler in the building was out. Back to the snowstorm that made it impossible for a lot of this area to cook on Thanksgiving…so they had their turkey when we had our fair.

The snowstorm kept me from physically meeting my friend, much less seeing the exhibit.

Sunday, I felt like I had worked. But, the car  needed to be unloaded and reloaded to hang the Sole City show, the gem of the year.

Monday, that show went up-and quickly! Joanne, who arranges their shows, was a tremendous help and I am so excited to see all of this work up together. By late Monday afternoon, I felt like that milestone birthday I am approaching is real.

And, I am gearing up for my 2nd show as the Show Coordinator of the BAA-that opening is on Friday.

Erin Duquette thinks I have five clones, and I want to find one for a back massage.
